The site is the creation of an anonymous Scottish businessman who calls himself “Viking Scot”.

Viking Scot says:

“If you want to see an England goal, it’s easy. Just switch on your TV and wait 5 minutes.

“But there’s no balance. You can see Joe Cole’s goal over and over, but not the goals scored against England.

“I’ve created this site so people can get some light relief from the worry that England might actually make the final.”

Could England actually win it?

“Sadly, yes. They’re not favourites by any stretch of the imagination, but they’re in with a shout. Of course, they’d be the worst team to win the trophy since … well England in ’66 … but the danger is real.”

And, if they win, what will he do?

“I’ll turn off the TV and avoid the papers for a week, after that, everything will be back to normal.

“Of course, every time England play, the commentator will talk about England winning the World Cup. But that’s nothing new, only the date will have changed!”

And his favourite England defeat?

“People remember where they were when they heard Kennedy was shot. I remember where I was where I heard that England lost to Norway in 1981. It’s hard to remember how bad Norway were back then. What a great result. What a great commentary.”

And the one clip he’d love to track down?

“I’ve been searching high and low for a clip of the Dalgleish goal – the nutmeg against Clemence – and I’ll not give up until I’ve found it.”

Fadó Irish Pub and Restaurant, located at 100 W Grand Avenue in the River North section of Chicago, played host to the official Chicago unveiling of the UEFA Champions League Trophy on Wednesday March 8. The invitation only event played to a packed house of UEFA officials, international soccer celebs and VIP Fadó customers. The trophy, the most prestigious club trophy in the world, is on tour in the U.S and the event at Fadó was one of just four stops in the nation ahead of the 2010 Champions League final in Madrid, Spain on May 22, 2010. The trophy was official unveiled by former Danish international stars and brothers Michael and Brian Laudrup and was covered exclusively by Fox Soccer Channel.

After the official unveiling, all 400 plus attendees had the opportunity to have a picture taken with the official UEFA Champions League trophy that has been hoisted by Manchester United, Barcelona, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Ajax, Bayern Munich and others.

Specially for the event, Fadó was transformed into a UEFA Champions League museum with one of a kind player memorabilia on display from the likes of Renaldo, David Beckham, Ronaldinho, Wayne Rooney and dozens more. Hundreds of fans attended the event, many dressed in the colors of their favorite European teams, and were treated to a hours of UEFA highlights on the high definition screens at Fadó Irish Pub.

Los 32 equipos compitiendo en el Mundial de Fútbol Alemania 2006 comparten 18 lenguas oficiales. Esto es sin incluir los distintos dialectos regionales que los jugadores utilizan. Entonces, ¿Cómo hacen los árbitros, jugadores y técnicos para poder comunicarse? La respuesta es sencilla, adoptan un idioma internacional que comparten. Así opinan los creadores de, justamente, un idioma internacional que fue publicado en Lulu (www.lulu.com), un sitio que permite que cualquiera pueda publicar su libro.

“Socceranto: Nacimiento de un Lenguaje” (www.lulu.com/socceranto), es un diccionario con muchas frases en el nuevo idioma. El proyecto fue comandado por dos fanáticos del fútbol: un estudiante de postgrado argentino y un estudiante secundario inglés, quienes supieron dejar las rivalidades de lado, para colaborar en el desarrollo.

“Todo está bien durante el mundial cuando, por ejemplo, Ecuador se enfrenta a Costa Rica o Ghana juegue contra Estados Unidos,” explicó Ted Freedman, 16 años, el inglés del dúo de editores. “¿Pero qué pasa cuando Japón se mida con Brasil o Ucrania juegue contra Arabia Saudita?”

El nombre Socceranto proviene de Soccer y Esperanto, el idioma inventado en 1887 por Ludwig Zamenhof, que es el mejor intento a la creación de un idioma internacional.

“El fútbol,” agrega Ignacio van Gelderen, 21, el argentino, “se ha convertido en el deporte más internacional del mundo y es la industria más globalizada.”

En cuanto al desarrollo del trabajo cuenta que “hubo dos discusiones grandes, muy grandes, una fue sobre la palabra Maradona. Finalmente tuve que ceder porque los ingleses eran mayoría y la otra sobre Boca, equipo del que soy hincha, porque los europeos lo ven como un equipo problemático.” Después de intensas discusiones van Gelderen finalmente accedió y a cambio hay un reconocimiento para el equipo que ganó todo el último año.

Socceranto usa seis idiomas principales, aquellos que usan las naciones que hayan ganado mundiales hasta la actualidad: Portugués (Brasil), Español (Argentina y Uruguay), Italiano, Francés, Alemán e Inglés.

La base de Socceranto viene de nombres de famosos jugadores y los términos callejeros y futboleros. También se han creado algunas palabras nuevas, y aquí hay algunos ejemplos:

caniggia: expulsión [Derivación: Jugador argentino Claudio Caniggia, quien integró el seleccionado argentino del mundial de Korea-Japón y fue expulsado del encuentro contra Suecia estando en el banco de suplentes.]

muller: goleador [Derivación: Gerd Muller, el talentoso delantero alemán de los setentas, quien sigue siendo, al menos hasta el mundial del 2006, el goleador histórico, con 14 goles.]

fliegenfanger: mal arquero [Derivación: La palabra en alemán para cazar moscas, terminó del ambiente futbolero para describir a los arqueros malos.]

rono: jugador (no brasilero) que tiene fantasía y estilo de brasilero. Brasilero honorario. [Derivación: proviene de los nombres de las estrellas brasileras Ronaldinho y Ronaldo.]

“Este libro es el comienzo de un proyecto a largo plazo,” dijo van Gelderen. “O como se dicen en socceranto, estamos en early doors (el comienzo de un partido). Esperamos que Socceranto crezca con el tiempo y se convierta en un idioma más rico, más internacional y con mayores términos que se utilicen.”

“Trabajar con los ingleses en este proyecto fue difícil porque vemos las cosas muy diferente,” cuenta van Gelderen. “Mientras desarrollábamos ideas y ejemplos, la pica siempre estaba presente.”

El libro también cuenta con el aporte del dúo argentino de diseño gráfico de Pillow (www.designbypillow.com) compuesto por Bruno Ferrari y Miguel Toribio para que los ingleses no sean mayoría.

Los creadores ahora invitan a los hinchas alrededor del mundo a proponer ideas y a desarrollar el lenguaje con más palabras en el foro que se creo para el desarrollo (www.lulu.com/soccerantodev).
